David Hill Planted Native Flora...

Sage Plant
Some native sage planted at the Mansion

After meeting with Judith Lowrey, author of Gardening with a Wild Heart published by University of California Press, and learning about plants that have almost disappeared from the landscape, Newhall Mansion at Piru owner David Hill decided to plant native species on the estate grounds. The restoration garden and hillside here are intended to be a demonstrations of native species from nearby the Chaparral in the L.A. area.

Mr. Hill also restored native species to five acres of a former cattle ranch in the Bolinas Area.

At the Newhall Mansion, David has combined his environmental advocacy with an aesthetic sense to make the Mansion grounds a sophisticated mixture of original Newhall landscaping and native species. The Mansion Grounds preserve and evoke a visual memory of the landscapes of historical California.
